Al didn't have to resign. He made that choice. Either Al knew an investigation would turn up something that hadn't yet been revealed and didn't want to drag anyone through that, or he thought it would damage the party and he cared about that, or, possibly both. Gaetz cares about no one but Gaetz.

And his replacement was Tina Smith who has pretty much the same politics and has been reelected by safe margins, so what is there to be gained from still caping for AL Franken? Even if you don't care about the sexual assault (and wtf why?), it helped Democrats to have him gone, it didn't hurt them.
