I was also trying to provide context re Gertner’s specifically, as she is someone who does in fact spend most of her time arguing for lower sentences for non-powerful people, unlike those who like harsh sentences or don’t talk about a need for more leniency except when someone powerful is at issue

For other reasons, I have my own issues with the lower sentences in all cases argument, but throwing the book at powerful people who break the law is exactly what a functioning justice system that's worth half a damn SHOULD be doing.
