NEW: Ultrafine particles (UFPs) from planes are putting 52 mn Europeans at risk of serious health concerns.
The WHO has been warning about the negative impact of aviation on human health for more than 15 years, but policymakers continue to ignore the problem.

Electric vans are essential to reducing delivery emissions, cleaning cities' air and helping small business.
We need to alleviate cost through grants and scrappage schemes, improve charging infrastructure, and set up zones optimised for zero-emission logistics.

The new SMMT car sales figures for June are heartening. Almost one fifth of sales are electric.
But work still needs to be done. A new government needs to get a handle on charger rollout and start to hammer home the transition to EVs via public communication.

Power generation is a vital part of reaching net zero but it can't be all we focus on.
Transport is the UK's largest-emitting sector. A new government needs take action to meaningfully reduce its emissions up to 2030 and beyond.

Trasnport is the sector that emits the most greenhouse gases in the UK.
While cars and rail are the things that directly affect people the most, the next government really needs to get a handle on emissions from aviation, shipping and trucks.

One public charger for e-trucks in the entire country is abysmal.
We must speed up processes to get chargers in, require new warehouses to have charging capacity and expand their grid availability, and encourage warehouses to share infrastructure.

Air pollution from ships, like sulphur oxides and nitrogen oxides, in ports is, in many cases, much more than is coming from the cars in the same area.
We need to clean up shipping and with it help communities that calls these ports home, breathe easy.

Clean Air Zones not only cut pollution they cut diesel fuel sales as well.
Rolling more out across the country would help improve people's health and make us more energy secure.

Cars on our road are getting bigger and wider and the next government can do something about it.
Reforming Vehicle Excise Duty and local parking fees could all help stem this worrying and dangerous trend.

The ULEZ scrappage scheme has seen just 2% of vans replaced by electric 🤯🤯
Boosting demand = a "the triple win" of tackling emissions, reducing costs for small businesses and boosting energy security.

The aviation industry can’t just be allowed to continue to grow while inflicting a hidden health crisis on millions of people across the UK.
It needs to clean up its act and clean up our air.

But London isn’t the only city at risk in the UK.
Just over 1.7 million people live within 20km or Manchester airport.
In fact more than half of the city is covered by the 20km radius around the airport.

In fact, exposure to ultrafine particles may be associated with 280,000 cases of high blood pressure, 330,000 cases of diabetes, and 18,000 cases of dementia in Europe.
UFPs are about 1,000 times smaller than a human hair and penetrate deeply into the human body.

🚨🌫️NEW: ultrafine particle pollution from planes is threatening the health of millions of people in the UK. 🌫️🚨
Across London around 4.4 million people live within 20km of three busy airports.
UFPs can be linked to the development of serious and long-term health conditions.

Vans need to decarbonise, for people’s health and for the climate.
We need more local clean air measures, better infrastructure for battery vans, diesel van scrappage schemes and plug-in van grants, and to help business exploit tech like cargo bikes.

The good news is that electric van sales increased sevenfold over the past five years.
That growth will continue to get faster as the ZEV mandate kicks in.
That means that this year 10% of all new van sales will need to be zero emission, rising to 70% in 2030.

In terms of air pollutants, which can cause respiratory illnesses, the picture isn’t any better.
While NOx emissions from HGVs and cars fell by 91% and 88% respectively since 1990, van NOx emissions have only fallen by 38%.
A trend being driven by high diesel van sales.

Well vans are the only road vehicle type bucking the trend of gradually decreasing emissions.
Van emissions have actually, fairly reliably risen since 1990.
If we’re not careful, vans could become the problem child of eliminating road transport emissions.

🚨🚚 NEW: THE WHITE VAN CAN DECARBONISE 🚚🚨
The number of vans on our roads has skyrocketed recently, with more than a million more being added between 2014 and 2023. A huge proportion of them are diesel.
What does this mean for our roads, our climate goals and people's health?

The more research done into the impacts of air pollution the more it becomes apparent that the faster we take action the better.
Clean air zones, switching to electric vehicles, and making efforts to use public transport and active travel can all help!

NEW: European and US used cooking oil demand is becoming increasingly unsustainable, with demand set to outstrip supply.
Not only is this concerning for clean fuel targets, it is raising the likelihood of fraud.

Climate change is a top issue for the UK electorate.
Odd then that Reform is dedicated to abolishing all forms of action.
Their policies would make us more reliant on fossil fuels with volatile prices in the middle of a cost of living crisis.

Labour's manifesto: strong on clean energy, EVs and public transport.
Better public transport and more EVs, and hooking them up to clean energy, would ensure we're capitalising on green British electrons.
Nothing major on aviation, shipping, and trucks!

Nothing to encourage cheap-to-run, clean electric vehicle and truck uptake which would make us more energy secure.
Nothing on aviation emissions.
Nothing on shipping emissions.

But there is a worrying lack of acknowledgement here of the need to decarbonise shipping and trucks.
These areas have been consistently neglected by previous Governments, and, right now, it's looking like the Lib Dems would carry on this trend too.

More broadly, we need measures that will support the public in making the switch to EVs.
That means a plan to tackle misinfo, and addressing concerns around battery health and access to reliable maintenance and repairs, and supporting people to access cheap charging options.

Electric vehicle charging infrastructure is a national success but the Lib Dems are right to see that we need to do more.
That is especially needed in terms of national, equitable distribution.
That will ensure families feel comfortable in accessing this essential technology.

Solid, well thought through commitments from the Lib Dems.
They recognise aviation is the problem child of transport decarbonisation and that we need to see the woeful undertaxation of the industry ended.
Polluters must pay.

The power of the EV transition in full force. Last year the UK secured the highest amount of investment in EVs - that's manufacturing, battery production and charging.
With the certainty the ZEV mandate provides comes more investment, that means jobs and a position as a leader.

SUVs make our roads less safe and make reducing emissions from cars harder.
