FWIW from 1982-88, Atari sold 13m 2600 units according to AtariAge. I don't know the NES/Famicom YOY numbers but they sold something like 60m total starting in '83. forums.atariage.com/topic/278285...

Nintendo sold ~12m FC/NES consoles over this period (and ~8.5m in JP and test sales as of the NYT story)

I'm sure those Atari numbers are frontloaded and the NES numbers are backloaded, too, just based on the console release dates.
