It’s all pretty deeply tied to a church schism in anabaptist sects in Swiss and German areas of Europe. Their preference to remain separate from the rest of US society has kept their language traditions strong, and it’s also a reason they’ll often call American outsiders “the English”.

The Amish speak “Pennsylvania Dutch” which is a bit of a misnomer. The “Dutch” part is just an Americanized “Deutsch” which is German for “German.” Pennsylvania Dutch is often considered a sub-type of “palatine German” from the upper Rhine valley.

It’s wild watching a whole different batch of people falling for the same exact type of media playbook that got us Trump in the first place. A lot of these folks scoffed and chortled at people who fell for it before but they’re all for it now because it’s supporting *their* own preconceptions.

Begging people to question media narratives about elections. What is reported, how it’s reported and what is amplified is not developed in some kind of holy and clean bubble outside of politics. We should be questioning the purpose of narratives *especially* when it confirms our fears and suspicions

It’s absolutely killing me inside because it’s the *same* campaign they’ve been using to move far right voters. The “sleepy joe” mantra is largely from Trump, and was parroted by Robert Hur to throw the same crowd a bone. Talking heads were waiting for a reason to jam the “it’s joever” button since.

JB has been a delight as my governor but he is unelectable for many reasons that, right or wrong, offend different groups of voters. He is a large man and for much of the electorate that’s a no-go. He is (((Jewish))). He’s also a billionaire. He also has the Chicago albatross hanging on his neck.

I know for a fact that I’ve made some good friends pretty heated recently because I have insisted that they are a mark for these exact kinds of media campaigns and that the factual nature of his cognitive decline is irrelevant to the manner in which information has been disseminated about it.

A whole lot of them signed on for the imperialism. The term “scotch Irish” exists because the Scots gleefully signed on to the Irish plantation systems and moved en masse into Northern Ireland as part of an imperial colonizing project.

Look, I’m on the internet way too much just like everyone else but I’ve become convinced over the years that it’s been as much of a societal ill as it has a boon, especially as I teach kids who have clearly not developed social-emotional and self moderation skills we used to take for granted.
