In case anyone doesn't understand the details, Gen. Sickles basically marched ahead of everybody else. This formed a huge bulge in the Federal line with soldier strung out in thin lines. Sickles was not known for his martial prowess and had no good reason. Even so, his soldiers fought like lions.

To be fair to him, he saw that the Peach Orchard/Wheat Field area was higher ground than the low land between Cemetery Ridge and the Round Tops that he was ordered to occupy. But of course, he couldn't just talk to Meade about it, and instead marched off like a doofus to his (leg's) doom.
