All of this. Also, besides positioning themselves in court, it's also generally beneficial to the people that own and run publishers if everyone (writers, their own employees, people in general) thinks books don't sell and make money: it lowers expectations in advances, marketing, salaries, jobs

Can confirm people buy books, im moving house and allowing for some padding and bubble wrap etc, THESE BOXES CONTAIN MY BOOKS and I will buy more.

the real scandal here is the weakness of labour in the face of profiteering shareholders. We should be sceptical of anything which argues for the justification of that weakness.
