Thank you. It’s touching that you phrase it that way, because for me it is more of a religious duty than anything else.

that’s very nice to hear. I’m fine, I would surely have felt a lot worse if I went along with the “non-political” program yesterday. And in the evening I got to talk with some of the amazing people at the Cambridge encampment!

It was striking to see the reactions to my talk on Palestine. Among the senior Bach scholars present, only one talked to me the next day. While all the phd-candidates were kind and supportive, even though we might have slightly different views. That brings hope.

A friend told me what happened when I left: the head of the conference stood up and apologised for my actions, followed by loud acclamation. In the evening, my supervisor (the same person) asked me if I was mentally ill.

an update: I expected some kind of reaction, but there was a dead silence the whole time. Afterwards, there was a muted applause and no questions. The chair said something about "both sides" and peace. Then the next speaker came up and continued with a talk on Bach as if nothing had happened.

I'm attending a Bach conference in Cambridge these days. It's the third day. No one has mentioned Palestine yet. Tomorrow, I'm scheduled to have a 5 minute presentation on aesthetics. I will read the newest Lancet publication on the death toll in Gaza instead.

"Applying a conservative estimate of four indirect deaths per one direct death to the 37396 deaths reported, it is not implausible to estimate that up to 186 000 or even more deaths could be attributable to the current conflict in Gaza." Rasha Khatib et al., The Lancet, July 5, 2024.

I agree with this to some extent - but if people on the left try to do good without considering imperialism, they are often doing more harm than good.

I see the connection between Gaiman willfully spreading Covid (knowing he was infectious while going maskless back in December) and his being a (alleged) rapist. Even if you don't. Go several months back in my posting history. I have always been disgusted by people fawning over him.

Andreas Scholl performed “Handel Love Stories” on 9, 10, 12.3.2024 in Haifa, Tel Aviv and Acre together with a singer who has been heavily involved in the IDF arena concerts. The project was announced in February 2024. It is not that complicated.

so I'm reading up on the early history of CIA, and it seems like some of the founding members (Frank Wisner, Carmel Offie) collaborated with N*azis during WW2? Is there any more literature on this? It would make sense that they cultivated relationships with them long before operation paperclip...

that's a super important perspective! I've heard about similar indigenous trading customs before, but they've been described as strategies to avoid violent conflict, and not as vital disease protocols, as you say. and it's hard not to see troubling echoes in the covid-19 pandemic today...

That's a super helpful way of thinking about it!! And the liberal approach is so effective, as Norwegians feel like they know a lot about WW2 or the history of the US, and don't need to educate themselves further.

Absolutely. WW2 is seen through an American lens. We also watched Hollywood films in class, such as Schindler's List or Saving Private Ryan. And the Marshall Plan is a big part of the Norwegian identity, it is seen as the catalyst for the economic upturn in the following years.

I think you just answered your own question there? For the same reason that conservatives don't want the crimes of the transatlantic slave trade exposed. Conservatives want to erase the history of all oppressed populations, while liberals want to whitewash it instead.

Hehe, exactly. But I really like these kind of approaches. I'm starting to wake up to how much my education in Norway helped instill an acceptance of US-imperialism, so I have a lot of counter-reading to do!

Yes, I'm aware of this - Hitler's American Model is a good reference. My question is more about the two kinds of pedagogical approaches - why is this taught as an unfortunate accident and not as a genocide to primary school children?

Thanks! It's a cool and strange piece: 1) "Finally, we'd still likely be a monarchy, under the rule of Elizabeth II, and constitutional monarchy is the best system of government known to man." 2) "Monarchs are more effective than presidents precisely because they lack any semblance of legitimacy."

In primary school, we were taught that the genocide of Natives in the Americas was caused by infections. It was never described as a genocide, only as unfortunate mass-death, similar to the Black Death in Europe. Are there any articles or books that engages with these conflicting interpretations? 🗃

"God’s Word is called rain, because it drives the sin-worms out of the heart; thunder, because it causes a healing destruction and kills the fruit of sin; a hammer that strikes rocks, because it breaks and softens the soul hardened in sin.” Heinrich Müller, Göttliche Liebesflamme, 1676
