As an American I try to maintain as much ignorance as possible of how the UK works, but is it possible for Labor MPs to switch after the election to make this happen?

Oh, that's an interesting question. It would come at a likely career cost to the MPs who switch, and MPs are typically (not always) committed party loyalists who would find switching distasteful. It would also seem to compromise the independence of the Opposition. But procedurally...
