It really is a weird symmetry that this year the UK elections are the 4th of July and the US elections are the 5th of November.

Over at the Bad Place, I made a tradition of posting Douglass' "What, To The Slave, Is The Fourth of July," and I intend to carry on that tradition here. Since most versions you read in classes or in textbooks have parts omitted, the link below has the full text of the speech.

Yeah, I was mostly thinking of a “chance to do the funniest thing ever” scenario. Maybe there’s also scope for a group of MP’s to defect on a theory of “Starmer deserves an opposition who disagrees with him”, but I don’t know if such a group exists within Labour at this point.

As an American I try to maintain as much ignorance as possible of how the UK works, but is it possible for Labor MPs to switch after the election to make this happen?

“Patriotism I s a word which always commemorates a robbery. There isn’t a foot of land in the world which doesn’t represent the ousting & re-ousting of a long line of successive ‘owners,’ who each in turn, as ‘patriots,’ with proud swelling hearts defended it… 8/9

Mark Twain hated the Fourth of July. He was often invited to speak at Independence Day festivities. His audiences assumed that his reliably unpatriotic remarks were tongue-in-cheek jests. But he meant that shit. 1/9

I think we could all use a bit of pick-me-up right about now, so seeing as it's July 3rd, why don't we once again reflect on one of the greatest white supremacist self-owns in military history:

The reality is that, so far, there's little polling evidence that Biden's lost much support since the debate. But that's not gonna permeate the bluesky ecosystem because election/polling twitter didn't migrate over here.

Totally plausible! But the fact that we have to have that argument at all is so frustrating when a one-shot RCV election would simply resolve it.

The problem is that the Dem primary electorate doesn't match the Dem general electorate, especially given the weird staggering of states.

Yep, same. Primaries followed by a general, with totally different electorates, is a shitty voting system for this reason! Voters aren't wrong to vote strategically! And looking back at the eventual 2020 result, I'm not sure Warren would have pulled it out.

A thing I get irrationally annoyed by is when people talk about the placenta as the parent’s organ. It’s not your organ! It’s the fetus’s organ! It develops in the embryonic sac! It has the fetus’s blood type! It has both maternal & paternal dna!

It’s Disability Pride Month y’all. Let’s try to be intentional in our work. Specifically, we should move beyond disability rights and into Disability Justice. If you’re not familiar with Disability Justice, how is a perfect time to get acquainted with the concept as outlined by Sins Invalid.

Just at the most basic level it is really unhealthy to have to thought about Donald Trump as much as everyone in America has over the last nine or so years. Spending a decade of my life thinking about a super boring, super shitty crook and all the bad stuff he's doing or might do. It's embarrassing.
