Highly recommend people getting well acquainted with the Red Summer of 1919, in particular, on that score. Really proves two things, 1. that the violence directed at black Americans was horrific and widespread and 2. that fighting back is sometimes necessary.

We all remember the non-violence of the 1960s (somewhat of a whitewashing of history because there was plenty of fighting back then as well) but 1919 was an altogether different story. And white Americans learned that black Americans were not going to sit idly by and accept second class citizenship.
