I think this is also the important divide between MeshInstance3D and the shape mesh. Because one is a node the other is a resource.

Yes, this is a powerful part of resources. Of course you have to remember when you want ALL of the entities using the same resource to update if you modify something.

My understanding is the big difference is that a node derived class can go into the scene tree and has process() called every frame. As a result a resource can cost less memory and compute overhead.

Nah. Aibro over there thought happiness could come from the push of a button. But what he learned is that when you externalize creation of meaning, you dehumanize yourself. He's about to realize that capitalism uses scarcity to displace human need to coerce behavior against self-interest.
