Thinking of July 4th baby Gloria Stuart, who has charmed everyone from pre-Code fans to Titanic diehards, and this supremely cool 1940s candid of her.

Ida Lupino 1949 "I really want to create stories, personalities, pictures. I have never been a fan of acting and sooner or later should like to remain behind instead of in front of the camera.I believe the public wants new faces and that it's interested more in what's in a picture than who's in it"

Jean Harlow and Carol Ann Beery (Wally’s daughter) take a look at the script of CHINA SEAS on the film’s set. Carol had a tiny but publicized role with her own name, ‘Carol Ann’.

I love this uniquely summery 1939 publicity shot of Mary Astor—fits the late June vibe.

I have another biography on a forgotten Hollywood actress queued up as well, and it might actually be more involved than the Jean Lorraine story. More on what to expect here: vitaphonezone.substack.com/about

So I launched a Substack, and my first post is an essay on Jean Harlow and two 1936 films slated for her that were made without her: SMALL TOWN GIRL and LOVE ON THE RUN. You’ll have to subscribe to read this one, but there’ll be free stuff where this came from: open.substack.com/pub/vitaphon...

She definitely didn’t go bald (or that close to it, really), contrary to popular rumor; you can spy her wet head of hair during the storm scene in CHINA SEAS. Just FYI.

Jean Harlow in a lovely, unusual publicity pose for CHINA SEAS, taken early 1935; this braided updo, accomplished with a wiglet, came to Harlow’s rescue after years of bleaching took its toll on her locks.

Remembering Jean Harlow, who passed eighty-seven years ago today at just 26. A once-in-lifetime shooting star that left behind not only short but wonderful filmography, but a platinum blonde legacy to boot. Photographed candidly during a 1934 central California vacation:

Thinking of Jeanne Crain—born on this day ninety-nine years ago in Barstow, CA (something that makes me happy as another desert gal). A treat in every film (nodding to LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN, MARGIE, STATE FAIR…). This is my all-time favorite photo of her, taken by William Mortensen in 1942.

I love when big braindead Twitter Blue content mills take watermarks off photos that belong to people they follow that actually own the photo, which proves the reasoning for having the watermark there to begin with. 🤷

Based off this glowing portrait of Harlow in her Beverly Glen pool, taken by none other than Clarence Sinclair Bull on July 20, 1933; one of her best and most prolific photographers.

The current late-May summery feeling seems best visualized by this Marland Stone illustration of Jean Harlow for the cover of Movie Classic magazine, July 1934. The ‘STARS IN LOVE MAKE BETTER PICTURES’ heading is almost a slightly ironic portent of the coming, more stringent Code.

Glenda Farrell “THE gold-digger of 1933—that's Glenda. And having a sense of humor, she must sometimes meditate on the irony of it all. For in real life she has ‘paid her own way’ since she was seven. …” — Motion Picture, Dec. 1933

Post sponsored by my finding her downright lovely all the time, but especially in Gambling Ship (1933), which I watched the other night and deduced would suck without her. Give it up for Benita (and Glenda)!
