It doesn't work so great in a larger area, but several recorded-in-history pirate ships seem to have been remarkably anarchist in philosophy. An anarrrchist commune, if you will.

Only an amateur historian at best, but I am firmly of the opinion that the failed (and kinda unfocused) attempt to form a "pirate republic" in the Bahamas ~1715-1718 was a direct influence on the Revolutionary War sixty years later. Young Ben Franklin was a Blackbeard fanboy!
