You're unlikely to find many things that require greater effort or are of more personal value to you than defending your precious doctorate. Layer uncertainty of direction on top and it's an evil cocktail. I wish we prepared people better for this...

My best advice is to recognise these feelings as a symptom of your values - an unpleasant side-effect of a genuinely noble thing. Give yourself permission to wallow for a bit, and relentlessly revisit the moments you're proudest of. Sending solidarity, and hugs if they're something that helps you.
