I wonder if it was written by someone from the UK or a similar country? In the UK at least, professor is considered the higher title than doctor, so you always go with prof if they’re a professor.

--huh, see, I would never title someone as "Dr." in a public-facing reference to them if they were a professor unless they were clear on preferring to be referred to that way; it would read to me as a serious dismissal of the higher title to replace it with the lower one. Like replacing Dr. with Ms.

Definitely not the point here, but it’s always wild to me how in some parts of the globe PhD > Prof and in some it’s the reverse. Right before seeing your post I saw a friend in the uk sharing a screenshot of her accidentally being ‘promoted’ to prof in a news byline.
