I would think that middle step (agent or publisher going to a lawyer) would happen, but I don’t know how this outlet reached out. If they got to Neil without contacting an agent, I can’t say how he would respond, including whether he would loop in his lawyer first.

There is a chance they reached out to him directly as he is very contactable on socials, but he would likely have gotten his people involved right away…but the knee jerk denial could have happened too. (He wouldn’t be the first)

This article mentions a crisis management firm being responsible to media requests, and if that is the case, I would be very surprised if Neil is out there making statements himself, especially without input from a legal team
