Yeah I was wondering what controls were used. Likely the only people who were peeing on grain were sexually active women, so lots of bias in the results. It wasn't until 1747 that James Lind performed one of the first controlled clinical experiments reported in the history of medicine (for scurvy).

The grain probably sprouted every time, but it "guessed" the pregnancy only most of the time because not all people who have reasons to suspect they are pregnant are pregnant, just most of them 🫠
