Eh. I think it's good to have language to talk about the effort that goes into relationships. It can be difficult, taxing, and take real skill, but because it's associated with and expected more from women, society likes to deny that.

The problem I've seen is that if you say "I'm doing emotional labor in this relationship" people online will assume you mean "I'm doing UNFAIR labor that should be FINANCIALLY COMPENSATED."

"Emotional labor" was coined by the sociologist Arlie Hochschild in 1983 to describe the emotional performances required by jobs (service with a smile, etc) it was never meant to be applied to interpersonal relationships outside of work.
