Sociologists and similar: I’m writing a review article (for the Annual Review of Sociology) and one of my favorite parts has been reading others’ review pieces, on all kinds of subjects, to help me understand the possibilities of this genre. What are your favorites? (Bonus if you can say why!)

It's older at this point, but I do like this one from Benford and Snow on framing and social movements. It takes a widely-proliferated literature and wrangles it into coherent threads. www.jstor.org/stable/223459

I use this one as an example in my grad writing class: www.annualreviews.org/content/jour... I like its organization and the way it structures the conclusion (plus it's really interesting).

I'm 100% biased because it was written by my dissertation co-chairs, but whatever, I still think this is great www.annualreviews.org/content/jour...

I really like this one. The subfield is relatively new and the debates aren't totally fleshed out, so the authors focus on identifying the research trends. They don't try to cover everything, but just enough to establish some distinct areas of debate.

this ARS piece is one of my faves! she takes the classic "what would happen if these two strands of lit engaged with one another" but asks why the two distinct strands arose in the first place—a question she answers by appealing to the questions enabled by the two strands' methodological approaches.

Small and Adler's Annual Review of Sociology paper from 2019 manages to integrate pretty diverse content across a range of areas (segregation, architecture) and yet still be quite specific and grounded. Just really clearly written too.

I really like many ARS pieces, they give nice overviews and introductions, this one in particular:

The one introduced above on spatial effect on tie formation is great as well.
