I read it as him losing himself and becoming a worse person. The speech his ex gives about how you can change your personality by pretending to be someone else and eventually you become them. He changed into a killer because he pretended to be one — I didn’t think it felt morally justified.

he has a nice family life and zero consequences by the end so i don't get "he became a killer" from that, if anything its like "you can kill someone no big deal then carry on living your life, as long as they did something to you first"
