You'll agree to 100 portraits at "bulk price" of $20 each and wonder why you're still so burnt out months later.

Idk who needs to hear this but please never offer a "bulk discount." You are an artist, not a machine of mass production. You're only agreeing to doing more hours of work for less compensation.

Hopefully a morale boost, I have not seen any impact from AI on my commission demands. If anything, the submissions for this year's opening actually increased from last year's. The WoW/FFXIV/D&D communities are filled with kind folks who just want cool art of their lovely OCs π

Advertise - Advertise your commission openings everywhere. Put it in your Twitter name. Put it in your bio. Pin it as your top tweet with a link to your Carrd. Folks won't know otherwise. My commissions are Patreon-exclusive now, but I still notify my patrons a month ahead.

Practice - Practice, practice, practice. If you're early in your art journey, you really shouldn't be thinking about selling your art. Hone your skill to a quality that is sellable, that people will want art of. It's okay if that takes a while. It took me 23 years.

Exclusivity - when you gain enough traction where demand outpaces supply, I highly recommend putting your openings behind something like Patreon/Kofi. Even a $1 membership is enough to filter out the folks who care and value your work.

Commission Queue - Have a Trello or similar where clients can track progress. This can also help you if you're juggling multiple commissions at a time. I sort mine into Waitlist > Sketch > Color Rough > Polish > Completed.

Whether commercial or private, commissions are professional work. And as the artist you are responsible for ensuring product delivery. Sure, IRL happens. Clients tend to be much more understanding when they've had consistent visibility into the progress.

Communication - is KEY. Update your client(s) on a weekly basis if possible. Avoid going longer than 10 days. This kind of work is all word of mouth. The better you are to work with, the more clients you'll have. Good experience/relationship = returning clients.

Application forms - Super recommend. Forms help your clients know exactly what you need from them (i.e. name, subject, references) and gives you a place to organize the info. Google Forms lets you export to a Spreadsheet for easier viewing too.

This is a popular question but there's no one-shoe-fits-all answer for this. Skill level, interest, and audience all play a part into your rate. Early on, you may have to trial by fire until you gain momentum. Then raise your prices when demand begins to overweigh supply.

Prices - Setting your prices at a flat estimate of your hourly rates makes it easier to invoice and approachable for your clients. Have revision fees for any additional work over what you allow. Research what others around your skill level charge for reference.

Keep it clean, clear, and legible. Text should be at least 11pts with readible contrast against a simple background. Don't waste time on bedazzling your site. Make it easy for your clients to get their information and go. Feel free to copy what you see on mine.

What're Ya Sellin'? - Have a place where clients can see a "menu". Knowing how much a portrait or full-body w/ background costs helps them budget for your openings. Have artwork examples to show so they know what they're getting.

Disclaimer #2: I've been told by professional peers and clients that my rates are low for the quality. I know. I've been slowly raising them but trying to keep them affordable for the incredible and caring patrons who have been supporting me through the years.

Disclaimer #1: I don't recommend having private commissions as your primary source of income. Since they don't include commercial rights, rates are often half to a quarter of professional rates. I do 12-16 pieces a year making anywhere from $3-5k.
