Toshinori Watanabe directing the Tasogare Outfocus anime adaptation means it has enough style (and thematically appropriate quirks wrt the camera) to make up for the fairly low production values and allow the writing to land. Hope it stays this way, it's nice

Wrote about Naoko Yamada's new film The Colors Within / Kimi no Iro. Its beauty inside and out, the careful depiction of its themes of acceptance, and the always amazingly wide selection of influences for a director who nonetheless makes movies that are easy to watch - this one chief amongst them!

Anyway, not done with the writeups but I've recovered enough to say that Annecy was fun! Definitely better as a vacation where I happen to do some work than flipping the priorities, even if the nice tourist stay is more expensive. Saw lots of cool stuff, and met people who are just as cool

Oh I had no idea, all it took was the slightest provocation for me to commit to the idea (and drag a friend into it, though she wasn't risking it since she could easily take a her train after that). In the end I'm pretty sure I'd have made it to the original flight time too so crazy ideas vindicated

Got into a screening to rewatch Yamada's new movie yet again, knowing that it ended one hour+ after the bus I was supposed to take to get to my flight. Flight got delayed by many hours anyway after I took an Uber. If you thought this wasn't a complete victory you didn't read the Yamada movie part

working on a sequence with continuity issues is actually a massive undersell of the problem - it was a whole lot more of them. It's also off in the assumptions (which at least are brought up with "I think") about which studio did what, and a bunch more basic level things that should have been edited

No one who has the slightest grasp of the anime industry would drumroll the reveal that "they use outsourcing studios", when every single anime on TV out of 50+ right now does except for one if you don't count KyoAni's tiny exceptions. They'd also be able to tell how incidents like "2-4 animators"

It doesn't matter if you happen to know someone in a team if they're a hired hand without a full view of the production, or if it later gets filtered through someone who doesn't really understand anime production dynamics. Leakers have 0 idea how animation works, they simply share things they don't understand from the loose-lipped Discord kids in an industry that loves child labor. The thread is inaccurate, editorialized, conflates industry-wide issues with Sasakoi's situation, and accidentally downplays it at points

conditioned by KyoAni's exceptionally detailed animation, which meant that she had to hold back nuance at points when voicing Mayu to avoid giving away all her secrets too fast, since the visuals already felt like they were doing so much. Lots of smart effort into making her a fascinating character
