The best possible case that I've seen floated is that since his statements are coming the source that we don't trust, they're completely fabricated too and the whole thing is made up. Thankfully, there's very few people pushing that. If that were the case, the radio silence would not be happening.

If the whole thing were 100% made up, I find it hard to believe that Gaiman wouldn't be out there saying that. His radio silence since this came out definitely says to me that there's truth to this and he's trying to figure out the right spin that maybe will salvage his reputation.
