This is a great, positive example of equity-oriented dataviz 📊. It shows people + policy + impact without shying away from essential complexity. I'd love to see more of these social research (Sean Reardon + Demetra Kalogrides) + data journalism collaborations (aatishb.bsky.social + Emily Badger).

“It’s still possible that wind power could rebound… The fate of the wind industry could be a test for whether the country can build large energy projects more generally, said Ryan Jones, a co-founder of Evolved Energy Research. “If we can’t… getting to zero emissions is pretty darn challenging.”

I spend months using satellites to trace what years of war have done to settlements in Ukraine. I found about 210,000 damaged or destroyed buildings, many of them protected under the Geneva Conventions t.co/q3bpXlAKwM this is the grim picture of what Ukraine has lost.

New Delhi recorded its highest temperature ever on Wednesday — 126 degrees Fahrenheit, or 52.3 degrees Celsius. For weeks now, temperatures in several Indian states have been well over 110, and hospitals have been reporting a rise in heatstroke. nyti.ms/450I6U2

I found this quite surprising, partly because my mental model of food wastage was more of a consumer side problem and I underestimated wastage in the supply chain.

Colors of an aurora depend not only on which element is emitting light, but also on *where* it is. Oxygen at high altitudes glows red; at lower altitudes it glows green. Purple nitrogen is lower still. Weird, right? 🧪

So many beautiful aurora photos going around right now. Wonder where those amazing aurora colors come from? Here's a useful breakdown.
When you split up the light of a typical aurora, it looks like this. Many colors from just nitrogen & oxygen!

Thanks Dan. One reason is to tie this to the global data (and not Mauna Loa specifically) even though the latter has a longer record. Also my colleague Elena Shao did this great piece on the Keeling curve a while back, so we opted for a different visual approach here www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Behind me, you can see 1 tonne of CO2 at atmospheric pressure.
It's enormous.
In a few hours of flight, we emit that amount (per passenger!). To remove it with #DACCS, you need to pump air 35,000 times through 20% efficient devices.
Preventing emissions is much easier than fixing the problem later.
