for sure! yeah it’s super addicting to just cruise through the dial and listen for faint stuff. or pull up a digital contact map and see what continents are lighting up this winter I was between jobs and passed some time getting digital contact pings from all 50 states. got a little certificate lol

my bro even did all three! but yeah you’ll absolutely crush it with your background. lots of baby stuff like ohms law and converting freqs to wavelength, plus a dash of FCC regulator crap you just memorize but it’s usually intuitive

BUT you can do some crazy cool stuff even with the first test. with $50-100 of gear you can send signals to passing satellites and stuff like that (even talk to astronauts if you’re super lucky!)

first test unlocks higher frequency stuff typically associated with handheld radios (city-ish range with repeaters), second test gets you the “classical” ham radio lower frequency stuff like global ionosphere bouncing

HELL YES. good lord do we need more ppl who aren’t old cis white men. i recommend doing the first two tests at once. the 1st one is VERY easy, and the second one is only slightly harder. there’s an app that has the literal questions on the tests so it’s kind of like taking a written drivers exam

in this mode basically it’s a little dance of text messages where you identify your locations and callsigns and exchange signal reports. in theory you could send any info but programs handle this “minimal” contact semi-automatically so it’s become a standard. also similar to quick formats for voice
