Looking back, I appreciate the editor from Tor who in one conversation told me:
1- They weren’t picking up my new series
2- They weren’t going to publish the last book of The Long Price Quatret in paperback
3- He was sure that someday I’d write a mature book.
Dinner anecdote for life, that.
Here’s my little bit of wisdom for new writers coming up: everyone who makes it as an artist or writer has their career shot out from under them a time or two.
That was the editor who was handing out his business cards to hopeful new writers and, as I approached, said "why do you think you're important enough for my business card?"
"I don't want your card, I'm here for my friend."
Ended with him throwing a card at me as I walked away.
That was the editor that asked me to send my first novel to him *behind my agent's back* because "hey, he doesn't have to know" and got flustered and argued with me because I said "actually, no, I think he does."
