That is extremely not the problem. "Welfare queens" don't actually exist, Ronald Reagan made them up to fearmonger to racists.

Ah, you're at the stage where you think "the system" is the hard rules written down. In 5 years you'll learn that it's a living system, it emerges from the people in it, and their attitudes and informal customs are part of it.

Anyone who would vote for Trump period isn't a serious person. But they still have a vote, and there's a lot of them, and they're going to use that vote whether or not you acknowledge them. Demanding that we only engage with "serious" politics is how you get fascism.

My *main* explanation for *gestures at the fire* is that the Civil War never ended, it just went cold. The Restoration was aborted because a broken South bitter at the North was politically useful to Southern politicians.

"What was your radicalization moment"
I don't think I've had a "moment", I've been marching leftward my entire life. But I think it was by and large my education in the humanities that took me from merely being disaffected to really being able to coherently criticize what has been built around me.

There's a particularly perverse misanthropy to getting so uptight at other people not having kids. A desire to fill the world with as many humans as possible through a neverending cycle of shame. It's like a memetic parasite.

Or we could stop compromising and force America choose between socialism or, well at this point, admitting to its own barbarism. The country has a history of making the right choice in these situations, it just gets ugly in the moment.

This situation is manufactured. When people live in a racist world, the Just World Hypothesis makes people see anti-racism as a threat.

The thing is, saying "it's not a person" isn't actually addressing the ignorance. It's just cynical.
Nobody likes a cynic.

I think I've pinned down why this kind of rhetoric irks me so much. "It doesn't know anything" is taking a fundamentally anthropomorphic framework. The sentence doesn't mean anything other than "it's not a person". Nobody except uninformed laypeople expected LLMs to be people.

That's neoliberalism for you: just don't worry about the possibility of unfairness. Everything's transactional, see, so it's impossible for anyone to get screwed over as long as you you just assume that literally everyone is a literal god.

Look, I don't want to defend techbros too much, the human mind is clearly vastly more sophisticated than ChatGPT, but it is still ultimately subject to the laws of causality. Our thoughts and creative abilities really do come from a series of chemical reactions we call "learning".
