We see this in all stages, from the printing press pamphlet wars of the 1500s, to radical early radio, to the use of the mimeograph/ditto machine by radical groups ranging from civil rights groups & LGBT communities to the KKK.

Yeah, makes total sense. Selection effects are huge, and the people with the most to say who couldn't say it before, are going to take advantage of new-found freedom (for better or for worse).
