i open IQAir about once a day and it was "fun" to see a "seriously unhealthy and unsafe" warning about a town 30 miles out with 150+AQI. thankfully ~fine~ here but, was "lol" to wake up to

Yup, although you need a N95 or KN95 for that, a regular surgical mask or a cloth mask aren't good enough for smoke.
