I wish all my favorite fan fiction authors who wrote impeccably developed characters and nuanced thoughtful themes, a million dollars and a non predatory book contract if they so desire. And if you haven’t read fanfic, give it a shot.

I read a fair amount of fantasy fiction. I’d just like to push back again on the idea that something being “fan fiction” makes it cringe or low quality. I’ve read very popular published books that utterly suck and I’ve read stuff on ao3 that blows them out of the water.

The new Great North episode we are breaking right now is so funny. No spoilers obviously, but I keep laughing when I review our thumbnails. We have really good voice actors but Will Forte killed me in this one.

As per my habit, with some extreme exceptions, I have now fallen in love with the characters in the show I’m working on. (The Great North.) also more shows should have completely unhinged end credit songs.

I truly believe these happy results come from our interesting experiences and feelings and our unique brains and preferences. Something regurgitating and copying other things cannot come up with what we can, even through our subconscious.

Some of my favorite things about animation are process, collab with others to achieve a better result and the organic flow that occurs that one cannot entirely plan. I do not see how a computer can come up with things I don’t even know I will discover until I do them.

Most skills you can learn through targeted practice and research. Some people’s brains might pick up things easier, but you can learn if you’re willing to put in the time. People act like art, gardening etc are magic. They are pretty magical, but they are often the result of study and practice.

My method: constantly be trying to learn and improve, then just throw myself in an make it happen. Most of the time it works and I learn a lot by doing things maybe I’m not entirely sure of. Try not to listen to your imposter syndrome. Do your best and just fucking do the thing.

First full animatic edit on the first Great North episode I’m directing. Proud of what me and my crew made. People talk about leaving animation but I’ve been here a while and it’s still amazing to me how we go from an empty screen to something that is pretty darn cool. 🤜🤛🌟

The emotions and imaginations of artists / storytellers potentially contain value far above the face value. You can change peoples’ opinions, make them feel seen, inspire, give escape when their life truly sucks. Even just moving someone or making someone happy is a huge thing.

I’m actually think that having media that expresses the maker’s specific point of view is way more valuable than catering to each individual viewers’ preferences. I don’t want stories dialed down only for me. I want you to tell me your stories, and I want to emphasize with you.
