Also, people tend to attach modern politics to these things and often those ideals don’t track with the reality of the time. Like it or not, things were different back then. Not saying better, just different.

It also gets awkward with period pieces from the 90s/00s with white male protagonists in the 18th/19th century having to take time out for a scene explaining how they were anti-slavery or were friends with the Native Americans. Killed the pacing and felt weird every time.
