I get that. When I want to write or prep a podcast and my ankylosing spondylitis is acting up. Sympathy!

We need to take seriously that these people can accomplish what they set out to do. There were members of the far-right publicly focused on nothing but SCOTUS seats since the 80s. It took 40 years, but they did it. (Are there people on the left thinking that far ahead with single-minded focus?)

Yeah… not 100% this is mostly on the voting public and not the press/pundits.

Yes! And buying “moral” art isn’t an inherently moral act either. You cannot “good taste” OR “consumer capitalist” your way to being a moral person. Reading informs the conscience. But it doesn’t make you a good person.

Judgment. Because I lived in the UK for two years and the British spelling with an “e” makes so much more sense. 😩

My (former Southern Baptist; ATL resident) impression is that “Baptist” is also not a particularly meaningful label. It has always covered multiple denominations, now more than ever—esp. w notable racial divides. Grouping them like this presents a bigger unity than what exists on the ground, no?

I honestly don’t know what you want me to do. I personally consider Audible better than Spotify, but I intentionally used your Libro.fm link because it’s better than both.

I explained why Spotify is so very problematic. And I provided two more (free) alternatives to both Audible and Spotify.

Apologies, for the quote post with an opinion you don’t like, though. The main intention was trying to raise awareness just how awful Spotify is and why. No one seems to know.

Amazon is an evil company. I use Amazon as little as possible. But on audiobooks, IMHO, Spotify is significantly more evil than Audible. Audible is generally paying authors—not enough, but not stealing their work and encouraging customers to help. Not going to engage in an argument on a Sat am.

If you’re in the US or Canada, you can even access free Japanese and translated from Japanese books through the Japan Foundation! (US link. You can Google for the Canadian. Sorry!) There aren’t a lot of translated Japanese audiobooks, but you can listen this way without helping Spotify steal! 4/4

I’m sure the same is probably true in many other countries, but I know for sure that many US libraries have apps with free audiobooks. The selection is limited, but there’s no theft involved. There are alternative services for the blind, too. 3/

I use Libro.fm, although I keep Audible for the extremely shady “Audible exclusive” titles. 😑

The thing is, Audible is morally ambiguous. Spotify audiobooks are pretty much theft. So many author’s whose work is literally being stolen by that app. Please don’t stream audiobooks on Spotify!

There are many things that infuriate me about the pundit class right now, but probably one of the top on my list: Project 2025 has posted their plans for every single federal department on their website. They have a training academy for prospective appointees. Where are the hard hitting op-eds?

I don’t TikTok, but I do know there is definitely a market for weird resin art. (Weird art period. I have a friend who bought art painted in someone else’s blood FFS.) How much of a market? Only God knows. Etsy has epoxy art sellers with 100s and 1000s of reviews, though.

My spouse, who has (but doesn’t professionally use) an MA in Classical Chinese poetry is having just the best time reading Tatsuhiko Shibusawa’s Takaoka’s Travel’s (trans. David Boyd). It is SO much fun to watch.

honestly hate that every time there's an industry bad actor, lists of "works by marginalized authors to support instead" start circulating like it's a moral obligation to be done out of guilt, & it's crickets every other day of the year. my art is not to be taken in as a reactionary measure

A good reminder. In 2024, it really is a disgrace that BOTH of the major candidates are way too old for the job. But acting like it’s Biden alone—or that Biden is the one with more marked cognitive decline—is ridiculous.

The corollary is maybe we should talk more about and share good opinions pieces. Or at least thank the people who write them? The incentives are really skewed at the moment.

The private school I taught at didn’t. I ran the English department, so you best believe I added a unit on “The Rhetoric of American Independence” so no student graduated without as much civics as I could justify as lit/comp. Later, I talked the school into letting me offer a dual AP Gov/civics.

FYI—I (GA voter) got the most obnoxious postcards in advance of the 2022 midterms. Claims I’d never voted (regular voter). Condescending explanations why it’s important. I know this program is well intentioned, but I hope most writers are being more conscientious than that.

Trump won on sexism and a D campaign that seems to have taken victory as a given. But lots of sexism. No one ever discusses the accusations of f-ing witchcraft against Clinton in the waning days of the 2016 campaign. Witchcraft?! That’s the oldest sexist accusation in the book!

Just thinking about this as I reread Cat Sebastian’s latest! It features a lean, well-dressed reporter with a soft belly. His love interest is tall + super bulky, but only because he’s a baseball player. The body isn’t what does it for either. Just mutual attraction bw men with different body types.
