I joke a lot about my capacity for despair, but there's enough Catholic discipline in my youth to remember that it is in fact a sin, one that absorbs all the best in you more comprehensively than a tar pit. I left the church ages ago, but I held onto that cable: despair is not a long-term good.

It's bonkers to me that anyone would not only choose, but PREFER to drive to/thru Manhattan. Anytime I visit NYC, driving looks so miserable. Like I get (I don't agree, but I get) why Angelenos would balk at congestion pricing for cars, but I DO NOT get why New Yorkers would be up in arms over it.

Also, if you have a Costco membership, they usually have very good deals on Vornadoes (fans in spring, heaters in fall)

Many a transplant from colder climes has moved here only to find themselves FREEZING indoors during winter while it’s like 50F outside and wondered why. Likewise, summer can be brutal if you don’t have AC (and a lot of people don’t).

Omg I thought you would have known this already! We might sound like unreasonable whiny babies when it gets cold in CA, but for a lot of us there’s a good reason: we lack proper insulation in our homes. laist.com/news/climate...

I’d never heard cicadas in my life until my early 30s, just couldn’t understand the fuss until I stepped out of a car one Labor Day weekend in Minneapolis and immediately said, WTF IS THAT SOUNDDDD

I worked at public universities for almost 15 years. Part of the reason I left higher ed 5 years ago is that I was so tired of mealy mouthed senior admin more worried about their imagined approval numbers than students and academics. Everything happening now is further proof of why I was so done.

TSA was much more fussy about film in those days, would tell you under like 1000 ISO could go thru x-ray. But I don’t think they see much film today and they did a hand check without incident.

Something I’ve been thinking about for the last couple of years as strikes have happened across the country, but especially with the WGA strike is that even as an observer, you learn so much about *your* rights and *your* labor from watching strikes happen around you.
