Couldn’t the same be said about social science too? It’s the human condition to make sense of events you did not expect.

Thank you I understand what you are saying. Interesting to see differences among economists what counts as bringing a ‘unique’ set of skills to the table. This realignment it seems is the key consequence of the empirical turn.

It sounds like yours is a division of labour argument. Noted and respected! But it goes a bit against the modern trend of economists taking up challenging empirical identification work w/o any regard of whose ‘turf’ they are on. For example as in this thread from X

Thank you for explaining, Daniel. I see now that you rely on the centrality of economic theory in the training of economists and hence making a point abt the wise use of resources in emp work. I wonder however if increasingly some economists do not see econ theory as central to their identity…

Can you explain why to be theoretically grounded empirical work has to be grounded in economic theory specifically? Just to be distinctive among social scientists? This reason sounds purely sociological rather than epistemic, hence suspect to me. Hope I understood you correctly…

@economeager.bsky.social unearthed this arresting quote from Simone Weil and I must share it with y'all:

Agreed, though much rides on how we define ‘ignoring the massive injustices’. Historically people living in circumstances that made protest impossibly costly, found subtle ways to express their pain, solidarity to maintain some dignity. I see these attempts now n struggle w whether they are ‘enough’

Can there be a better example than this of drunk man looking for his keys under the light because that’s where the light is? There’s no way such entrenchment of causal inference methods is well ordered science.

I am in favour of going 'beyond GDP' but so much of the advocacy is bad.
I used to blog a lot but stopped to concentrate on academic papers, and because my blogs tend to be polemical in a career-compromising way. This one is no exception.

Agree, Lisa, fascinating to see that beliefs are grounded in memories and grow upwards from it. Very foundationalist rather than coherentist! What's the bit about delusions? I missed it.

First time I'm bringing stuff from Twitter over here (and apologies for that) but I couldn't find another link elsewhere and this comic by Erin Basca about her experiences (as a student) with a professor deserves to be shared. It's a deeply familiar story.

I really hate how the current AI discourse has so many people using “intelligence” so uncritically. Re today’s stupid headline: PhD holders aren’t generally more intelligent than others; we have specific skills, interests, and practices we get really good at, as do others.

So interesting! Not sure I follow the final paragraph. It sounds skeptical of any possibility of responsible expertise at all. Do you mean that? Or just that neither side will be heard?
