OK besides this below and DEVO coming out of the Kent State massacre, what are other facts you have about the evolution of art / music /etc that wouldn't be obvious if you didn't know but, retroactively, explain and/or illuminate a LOT ?

while I haven't seen any scripts, there was a yt vid that posited that the movie was intended to have Spider-Man from the get-go, and only very late into production/shooting did they decide to axe his presence; this explains the vast quantities of VO where the mouth doesn't match the sound

as a non-academic CS weenie, I would prefer to see the particular technique/software cited rather than generic "deep learning"/"machine learning" (and definitely not "AI") - eg "Torch-based Feature Pyramid Network/Stochastic gradient descent analysis"

Happy birthday, and great article! If you're not familiar with it, you may be intrigued by Don Lancaster's Vaporlock methodology to determine solely via software where the VBL is. (short ver: write-only memory contains ghosts of the vid display, and clever patterns in screen holes allow sync calcs)

Eh, I've seen (and written) much worse. Mostly the multiple pages of .= and use of `my $foo_bar = sub { }` (and slightly nonorthogonally named at that) make my brow furrow a bit, but it also has the air of "there were reasons to do it like that at the time", and is still usable 16-yo code

my phone decided to react to the discourse and today's scotus nonsense and everything else by having its battery turn into a spicy pillow (and overheating, and not charging), so I suppose I'll be way less terminally online for a while

Intergeneration (and especially generation-skip) conversations are great! I suspect that a good portion of people who've had negative reactions to such are from when one group (often the older) talks *at* rather than talking *with*

my GRE scores were pretty mediocre; I was burnt out from work and couldn't be bothered to review the test material. (everything from jr high onwards was actually-terrible, not just terrible-for-bluesky; yay undiagnosed and untreated ADHD)
