I recommend a look at the website for PCRM - Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. They make a case much more eloquent than I,and have had great success bringing some excesses to an end. Worth a look.

Yes, I'm afraid so many otherwise good meaning researchers find themselves caught between ethics and finances. But some "research" goes beyond acceptability. I believe this is such a case.
