Google’s emissions are up 48% in 5 years. Microsoft’s are up 30% since 2020. Those soaring figures are being driven by mass investments in data centers to power AI tools. Generative AI is a climate disaster and data center expansion must be stopped.

The Australian government is partnering with Amazon for a system of “high-security” data centers, effectively locking in Australia’s dependence on Amazon well into the future.

I live in the “Data Center capital of the world” and tech companies are trying to develop on historic Black cemeteries. This increased demand for computing power is a climate justice as well as a racial Justice issue.

This is a nice piece to keep at hand as it deftly lays out the ravages of AI on the environment. Even easier to digest for those of us seeing data centers (almost literally) gobble up our backyards.

I’ve been loving @jasonkoebler.bsky.social’s reporting about Shrimp Jesus and the other wild AI-generated images he’s finding on Facebook. We don’t pay enough attention to that social network anymore, but it still has a massive impact. I was thrilled to have Jason back on the show!

canada is the only commonwealth countries with two tombs of the unknown soldier — one in ottawa, another in st. john’s — because newfoundland was its own country until 1949. july 1 is both canada day and memorial day in NL. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

watching the unknown solider being buried in newfoundland and labrador’s national war memorial the other day, i was struck by how NL has things called “national” because it was its own country, but quebec has things called “national” so it can cosplay as one

The United States won’t allow a global tax treaty to move forward and now it’s threatening countries that tax multinational tech companies anyway. “US lawmakers and government officials view the tax as unfair and have threatened to retaliate if Canada moved forward with it.”

A total ban is the only sane policy for Airbnb. There obviously needs to be accommodation in cities for visitors, but that shouldn’t be at the expense of housing units for people who actually live there. More governments should follow Barcelona’s lead.

The story is always the same: major tech companies tell us they care about the environment to silence criticism, then never actually follow through. Google’s emissions are up ~50% in 5 years, following similar news Microsoft is also blowing past its climate commitments.

“Acquisitions are not the only way for large tech companies to access start-ups’ intangibles and talent while keeping potential rivals at bay. A more hidden yet prevalent form of domination involves the use of corporate venture capital to get preferential access.”

Because Amazon benefits from it even more than they do. The de minimis threshold was raised from $200 to $800 in 2016 and most of what Amazon brings in from China falls under it. David Dayen says it was known in policy circles as the “Amazon loophole.”

Shein and Temu are cutting into Amazon’s business, so now the ecommerce giant is planning to respond with a discount section of its own.
It’s another stage in retail’s race to the bottom on labor abuses and environmental harm — and it needs to be stopped before it’s too late.

I'm not shocked. As it stands, outside of food, media & brand name items, Amazon is Temu, AliEx, Shein, etc. but more expensive & with maybe faster shipping. I used to get my neighbors' misdelivered Amazon orders, now it's Temu. Amazon couldn't become Internet Costco, so it'll become Big Lots now.

give your delivery drivers business cards to your local Teamsters Go to your local Teamsters and ask what they're doing for Amazon right now (some locals need to hang back depending on the current climate of the area, please be patient), ask what you can do to help let's organize 💪🏼

A thing i didn’t realize that I learned in this piece: wages were depressed in the US intentionally with the intent of making up the difference for consumers by offering us cheaper goods produced elsewhere by people making even less, and that’s why you can’t buy anything at an actual store anymore

the thing that sucks is that like most of the shit amazon recommends (clothes, storage, electronics) is already temu shit (made the same way in the same place) but it costs more bc of stocking cost I'm trying my best to just buy less shit. :/

It was a real pleasure to have @jasonhickel.bsky.social on the show to dig into the role he envisions technology playing in a degrowth society and the possibilities it offers us to refocus our capacities on tech that actually benefits all of us instead of the bottom lines of big tech firms.
