A neighbour from a distant country and a different culture has been trying to process his astonishment this morning that the work on refitting / restyling / re-tiling his bathrooms wasn't finished yesterday, as promised. Nor half-finished.

It’s wild to me that a football match between France and Portugal takes precedence over BBC’s main news on the day of a uk election. There’s a growing wave of nationalism but it can’t compete with football.

Too few ordinary state-funded schools invest in the game, despite the character-building, socialising and networking advantages that exposure to rugby gives boys who go far. Some form of state subsidy is called for to spread rugby down into the middling middle class.

While making no comment whatever on the instant case, it is in principle undesirable ever to jail convicted policemen. In the ordinary prisons they could find themselves sharing cell space with real criminals they had been obliged to fabricate against or plant evidence on.

It's interesting to see nationalistic Irish people who claim not to do so in fact treating Britain as the mainland. It's evident in their deep interest in the minutiae and personalities of British electoral politics and in their transference of their political emotions to the politics of Britain.

What possessed the Official Unionists to run a candidate who had gone native in England like Colonel Tim Collins OBE? They needed people as Irish as old Lord Brookeborough - people who know all about potholes, hedges and hunting, and who seem to know nothing much about Rolls-Royces.

On July 4th, 1826 John Adams & Thomas Jefferson, two members of the Committee of Five, authors of the Declaration of Independence, died 50 years to the day after its adaptation in 1776.
I found their dual obituary randomly folded deep inside my copy of book published in 1757. (1/2)
