It's really hard for me to say what my "favourite X" is. It depends! Recently I learned that this is an experience many people have too. So for warm-ups/icebreakers, I just answered as if they asked to name one of my top/most liked X. And now I try to frame my warmup Qs like this too!

I think I had more (co-authored) papers published in the year after I left astronomy than most years of my postdoc because: - scientific publishing timelines are messed up - two kids born in 2.5 years of postdoc (2017-2019) - 2020 was 2020

hooray! kids school sent out their school supply list before the summer (as many families requested) and even better, there is no supply list, we just contribute a flat fee and the school gets better quality supplies in bulk!!

I feel like they basically sell starter kits to become that guy. My wife got me a pack from Costco. It was nice but I didn't become that guy because I have terrible taste buds and they were all kind of the same to me lol. Also I really like consistency so I just have a couple of go-tos!

Was in a 6 hour training session today for a topic that I wanted to learn and cared about. It even had breakout sessions and group practice. But can still confirm that being in a learning setting for the whole day sucks. Really glad to be done with school :)

Totally. When I do have to drive to Victoria, the sunrise over the Malahat makes up for having to leave so early in the morning

We used to go to the butterfly garden almost every weekend when we had toddlers and lived in Saanichton. Maybe good for us to take it as a fun outing from up island to visit the butterflies one day!

I think about taking the ferry sometimes to avoid the highway and traffic but the timing never works out / is the same time length anyways

Yeah, most time zone conversions I did growing up was to figure out when a hockey game or TV show would air on the west coast given an east coast time. Unless it's March or November, when I see EST or EDT, I just pretend it said ET.

In Canada, we don't really think about UTC and it feels weird to have the country be 4-8 hours away from a reference. If we did choose a reference time it would be the US East Coast, likely.

techbros are consistently incapable of making good takes about intelligence having a PhD doesn't mean you're smarter, it just means you got a PhD. there are many kinds of intelligence, and techbros are the kind of arrogant idiot that doesn't understand that

Sorry to hear about that therapist! I feel that I have lots of compassion but I don't really know if I have empathy. Or maybe I do but the definition I have in mind feels almost impossible outside of a few specific cases

Yeah hand wash stack up until the evening usually. Sometimes even the next day :( But we need the counter space and it's stressful to see the stack!

I grew up in a "the dishwasher is a storage cabinet" household and we have three young kids so I really try to limit wash by hand these days. It's just sheet pans. I had a cast iron that I washed by hand for some time but still felt like too much work. Maybe when kids are less time consuming!

anything i can't throw in the dishwasher or very easily wash by hand is not worth it! even things that say "not dishwasher safe"---if it won't get destroyed, I'll usually dishwasher it anyways, having it wear out faster is better than hand washing

I miss living in a place where avocados were cheap and abundant and you can go to the grocery store and get one that's ready for dinner tonight, one that will be ready in 2 days and one for later in the week.

I have never seen it for police departments but our local fire dept has a real-time* webpage that lists every incident where they send out responders. Tells you the general block, type of call and which engines are out. *Just refreshed the page and the most recent entry was 7 mins ago

6yo said they invented a "new math sign" and handed me this lol Anyways, they said you have to times the two numbers together then times by itself. I only received one scrap so I'm not sure if they mean f(a,b) = (a*b)^b or f(a,b) = (a*b)^2

High school and university and it was all "transparencies". Very few PowerPoint classes in physics/math. I didn't hear viewgraph until grad school because only the emeritus profs used it and you don't generally meet them during undergrad lol

On the other hand, once they are past initial screening, I do want to read good writing in the assessments! Screening is just checking for minimum requirements. Assessments is when I check if people can actually do the job. Save the good writing for that!

When I screen applications, I want them to repeat my job requirements back at me with their details. I write: Must have at least 3 years of python experience. I want to read: I have 5 years of python experience doing XYZ at ABC place. I don't want to read: I solve quant problems with Python

Yeah, I have to gently push back when they say things like comparing school behavior to the workplace. 1) I'm not interested in preparing my 6yo for the workplace and 2) I and the staff I supervise have all of these accommodations and more! (Not every place will be like this I know)

I really, seriously don’t wanna be a jerk but academics need to stop talking about “academic freedom” and start talking about “administrative harassment” or “political bullying” or something Use words other people understand and have sympathy for

One frustration is for big all school events like assemblies. They are stressful and the kid does better if they can do an alternate activity. But they can't always spare a staff member for just a few kids that need the space. But why not just have an entire classroom for alternate activity

That's really helpful to know what it should look like. I think we are lucky then, the staff have been framing it this way. Next time, we can talk about how many times out of 5 etc. So far, most support discussion is good but they always say limited by staffing.

I think we have good goals, but it's just the second time ever. A little frustrated that some needs from disabilities are treated like "preferences. Also the general approach of getting the kids to "fit in" with the general population instead of providing accommodations to address individual needs

We had one of those this past week. Better support though, but still a stressful time to feel like I have to be on the alert to advocate. Still, I am need to follow up next time on a comment.

I don't know what it's like now, but 20 years ago, we got a lot of training to "write like an academic" in our uni English classes, but little learning in the wisdom to choose which type of writing to use in specific situations. (disclaimer: I still make this mistake at work a lot, still learning!)

I am pretty sure this guideline is not meant for specialized situations like higher ed or specialist audiences. eg the standard writing level at my org is Grade 8 education but of course we would not write our technical manuals to this standard. www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/...

Not a usual thing for me, but I love my backup plan of time critical work between 10pm-midnight and then setting a scheduled email for 8:03am the next day. Not in academia now so I usually take the equivalent time off later (or already had to take time off which caused the time critical-ness!)
