Finally: This was a part of the JWST Early Release Science Transiting Exoplanet Program. There will be a combined release of this and two other results later this year. JWST has been in science operations for 2 years now, but we still benefit from these deep dives into data and models! πŸ”πŸͺπŸ§ͺ

4️⃣ PARTIAL SATURATION imparts wavelength dependent effects in the spectrum. Using different numbers of groups to extract regions of that are partially saturated relative to the rest of the spectrum leave different amounts of uncorrected linearity and first-group effects in your data ❗❗❗❗ βπŸ”πŸͺπŸ§ͺ

3️⃣ The highest resolution modes (NIRISS SOSS and NIRSpec G395H) are most impacted by choices in how you treat limb darkening. Fitting for it at high resolution can impact your spectrum! (See methods, extended data figure 4) βπŸ”πŸͺπŸ§ͺ

2️⃣ When performing a uniform analysis across instrument modes (meaning uniform orbital parameters in your spectroscopic light curve fits), you should still expect offsets in your transmission spectra between instruments. They are small, but they are important! Account for them in your modeling βπŸ”πŸͺπŸ§ͺ

Main Results: 1️⃣ The combined power of the white light curves provides unprecedented precision on planetary orbital and STELLAR parameters! WASP-39b's orbital period is constrained to sub-second precision! And peep the precision on stellar density in Table 1, equivalent to asteroseismology! βπŸ”πŸͺπŸ§ͺ

When I organized my studio, I also found a TON of watercolor pieces! So I’ll have mini paintings, mini prints, and some random paintings available on July 12th ✨

I'm calling this the "Summer of Spitzer" Previously it was the "June of JWST". Though, tbh, it'll still be the "July of JWST" too... and then the "August of All the things" and then the "September of So much to do" and then the "October of OMG CYCLE 4 DEADLINE" (πŸ« πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«πŸ™ƒ)

Ok, starter packs are SERIOUSLY cool. I am so happy with this feature! Thank you, @bsky.app!

Here's my v1 Astronomy starter pack: go.bsky.app/KfuFR5s

(N.B: when I'm back from holiday I'll make the list of included accounts more equitable, for now it's just people who I can remember post a lot)

In good news, as of next week my building will have a second lactation room! I've been pushing for this since I came back from leave in December πŸŽ‰

I understand being concerned that the audience isn't as invested in the DEI session. But calling people out for leaving is not appropriate. You never know *why* someone is leaving the room. There are countless medical reasons and personal reasons for why someone may have to step out from talks.

I got back and heard this comment and was honestly shocked. A DEI speaker should be aware that people may be leaving the room for medical reasons. Instead I felt called out and ashamed. Because I was sticking to my lactation room schedule that I've been on for months.

I'm at a workshop this week. During the DEI session the speaker called out people for leaving the room during those talks. Keep in mind the room was just as full as during the science sessions. But I was one of those people who stepped out because I had to go to the lactation room.

Yeah, even just the stress of piecing together my own salary is making me go gray (okay that's probably not the only reason πŸ˜…) I can't imagine ever trying to support more than 1 student.

When the average ROSES XRP award can only fund one full graduate student or one full postdoc + a summer month of faculty time - how are people supporting their groups??? (this makes it very hard on soft money people like me to have grad students too)

First work trip since baby (and first night away from baby 😞) and the hotel room fridge doesn't seem to be working 🍼🫠 At what point do I decide this mini fridge isn't getting any colder and go complain? Already had an argument with the front desk person about government rate rooms 🫣

Given that we have codes of conduct to make our meetings and collaborations safe and inclusive spaces, it's a bit strange that we still choose to have them in Florida and other states that are openly hostile to members of our community.

This is irresponsible. Irresponsible science and irresponsible science reporting. πŸ§ͺπŸ”πŸͺ (apparently the paper isn't even in pre-prints yet, but I can assure you life was not found on K2-18b or any exoplanet yet. Every claim by this group does not hold up to scientific scrutiny)

Hi friends - I know a lot of you loved Button too. She was diagnosed with some chronic conditions in late 2022 and did better than expectations, but unfortunately we had to make the decision to euthanize her early this week ❀️ Button was the best floof and we already miss her terribly.

In my husband's words, who didn't quite understand the hype until 3:11 pm local time, "I think everyone should see one at least once, no matter how far they have to travel" In everyone else in our group's words, "I now understand why a 99.9% eclipse isn't enough"

I think my favorite part of this total eclipse was getting to share the experience with people who missed out in 2017. And watching them realize what an amazing event it really is as totality began and they took off their eclipse glasses ❀️ (quick unedited & low res transfer from husband's camera)
