Film folks: just saw the new quiet place and in the dark scenes (of which there are many) there was this weird digital bloom where it seemed like if one part of the image was too dark it would just turn into one matte black very pixelly shadow. Is this normal or did we just go to a shitty theater

Assuming it was a normal DCP and not overcompressed, probably a shitty theater. It sounds like the blacks were being crushed, like the projector wasn’t calibrated correctly so stuff close to black gets projected as just black, which can produce that kind of image.

It was super distracting because it would especially make faces distorted, like I was laughing at one point because the lead actor looked like he had a spontaneous spray-on black beard
