Most political reporters thrive on palace intrigue. Washington, to them, is a cliquey prep school, and they're the gossip mongers who are always in the know. Some might self-aggrandizingly couch that as "holding power to account," but that's not really their motivation. They'll thrive under Trump.

They'll thrive under Trump as will anyone who obeys or otherwise works with them but dictators love to make examples out of anyone who steps out of line and reporters can do that easily by accident even. By then they'll have helped cut down all the laws and nothing will save them.

That he’s admitting he’s working with Putin to hold a journalist hostage so that he could use their release as a tool for his campaign should be a major red flag for reporters… but @washingtonpost.com @nytimes.com and others barely mentioned it under a barrage of “Biden is old” articles.
