One study says drinking beer, even quite lightly, will shorten your life. Another study says mice who guzzle IPAs are protecting their DNA. So what’s the story here—is beer safe? Let’s have a deeper look.

Here’s @evanrail.bsky.social with quite a story: a push-button, molecularly-accurate beer dispenser. I have all the feels, and many of them aren’t pleasant.

Portland’s annual Fuji to Hood is more than just a beer fest. “It allows the brewers to let go of preconceived notions of what beer should be or how we were taught to brew,” says regular participant Charles Porter of Little Beast Brewing.

To the “independents”—those wiling to live or die by the choices they make. They choose this path to pursue visions and they make the beer world diverse and interesting. Yet it is not an easy path. To be independent is to be at risk, always.

So to them, happy #independentsday!

My father’s position is that you shouldn’t start drinking until the pm. This leaves one terrible hour of no indulgences.

A year ago, David Nilsen and Melinda Guerra launched Final Gravity, an old-school paper-copy zine. It may seem like a perverse move in our digital age, but its very tangibility has new salience in a world where the rest of words we read are mere pulses of light.

This is why I’m not super freaked out by a world with AI. Some will use it judiciously, some won’t use it at all, and some will flood the zone with garbage. Same as it ever was….

Evan’s your guide here, but: Pivovarský dům has awesome food in addition to great beer. Lokal is good to get a sense of how local, young drinkers hang out. Go there late. I have to make a pitch for the polotmavy at Strahov. Skip Matuska. Good lager, but very American and there are better places.

Did you ever wonder if the art on a beer can might have been generated by AI? Increasingly, the answer is likely to be yes. Let’s look examples from two breweries to see where this is all headed.

On Monday night, Cascade Brewing announced it was closing, effective immediately. It was one of the most indelible of the golden-age sour breweries, and its beers were truly unlike any others on the market. A remembrance.

How many tanks are sitting empty in the brewing industry? Excess capacity is one way to assess the health of a market, and looking at figures from the Brewers Association, things don’t look good.

I hate criticizing my colleagues, but holy moly, this piece. Five years ago, cock your head and squint and maaaaaaaaybe the argument made sense. But today it’s crazy. I clicked through and learned the writer is from Boston. He needs to get out more often.

No top ten breweries list this year. But I can’t leave you entirely in the lurch, so here’s Portland’s brewery of the year. As a fun factoid, it has never appeared on one of my top-ten lists, either. Who says beer isn’t exciting anymore?

In his latest VinePair piece, @dinfontay.bsky.social speaks for the Anchor workers (and strafes me along the way). And he’s right: with any owner, the rule has to be: show me, don’t tell me.

We’ll see.

With a pull quote like that, I’m having a very hard time clicking through. (By contrast, I hate the fascination with British royalty/upper classes. I have no idea why Americans go crazy for movies about the Victorian aristocracy sitting around a drawing room in absurd clothes.)

Eight Days hence! Go to Prost! in Portland, taste and rate 12 pilsners, possibly win a trip to Germany! I have been invited to be one of the "beer and industry professionals" judging as well. A few years ago they did this and it was pretty cool. Sun's out, pilsner's out. You know the drill.

When a brewer tweaks the formula and gives a name to their new creation, we tend to want to use the lens of “style” to understand what’s happening. That’s not always the best way to think about things, though.

I get it, too, but had I been at the table I would have replied: “Yes, our industry needs to be receptive to people who drink the FMBs our members make—but at the &@#%! *GABF*, we’re sticking with actual beer.”

I wouldn’t put it that way, but they are still suffering from having a mission that was for years incompatible with the beer market and now they’re paying a price backtracking.

One excellent case study in Portland is Brujos Brewing, which turned the inside of their warehouse into a “scorched cathedral” (the theme is gothy/horror). It was a mostly cosmetic job and pretty cheap.

That makes it more challenging, for sure. But so many breweries do basically nothing to personalize these spaces, and I can’t blame people for not choosing them as their local hang. How you decorate your space is up to you—not its location.

Is May the season of our discontent, or is there just something in the air? Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of grumbling about hazy IPAs, a sense of lost fun, and a generalized mood of dyspepsia. But I think things are pretty good.
