A joy to have this as the last piece I assigned and edited for GBH. Great work as always, Adrian. (Stellar images from Cliff, too.) Onward!

Immediate? Kinda. We’ll still be publishing new stories over the next few weeks as we shut things down.

Me, a couple of months ago:

"The entire culture that surrounds beer has changed and still is changing [...]
"That means, inevitably, that how we write about beer has to change as well.”

I bought so much stuff at Long’s Drugs in Central California growing up in the 70s / 80s. We were there constantly.

Can anyone familiar with Philly's brewing scene tell me whether 2nd Story Brewing still exists? It seems like they shut down "temporarily" in 2022 but I'm not sure if there's an actual plan to re-open or not.

I forgot to mention Matuška Automat, which has seemed to please American brewers exceptionally well. And that’s just a short walk from Pivovar Bubeneč, which has an 8º on right now that is absolutely excellent. Summer of Osmička, every summer...

I’d go to U Fleků to try the tmavé pivo and get a sense of the atmosphere and history (the garden is lovely). Compare it to others like Černá Svině. I know @beervana.bsky.social had thoughts about the tmavý Benedict at Pivovarský dům.
Maybe @akrennmair.bsky.social also has some Prague suggestions.

Okay. There’s a lot to Prague, and lot of ways to approach it. I think the best thing outsiders can learn is an understanding of hospoda culture and atmosphere, but if you want to get a better sense of what Czech beer styles are supposed to taste like, you can do that, too.

It fits the idea, sorta. Like a band couldn’t make that album today without it seeming intentionally retro. But at the time, it was of its time. I loved it. (I used to go to a lot of MK Ultra shows. One time no one else showed up, so they gave me a T-shirt. Still have it somewhere.)

It’s the worst, and yet somehow still getting worse? Superlatives don’t function anymore. Did you ever hear MK Ultra’s “Original Motion Picture Soundtrack” album? It’s like a mid-90s movie soundtrack with snippets of movie dialogue and everything, but there was no film. Nice concept. Good songs.

I have this very idea in my pitches folder, but I haven’t pitched it yet and am unlikely to get to it soon or possibly ever. Which is a long way of saying “great idea!” Good luck with it.

It happens. I’m just under 6’2” but if height comes up it’s easier to say 6 feet. Otherwise you get a lot of “you don’t look that tall” and people trying to figure out if you’re a liar, and / or what’s wrong with you.

In Belgium, this is what Stella Artois is normally served in, where it is / was sold as a “core lager,” not a premium beer.
The Stella Artois “goblet” vessel was invented by Whitbread to market the UK version that it brewed under license starting in 1976. www.belgianbeerheaven.com/be/en/produc...

Yes, and the volume. I believe it’s called a boerke in Belgium, where it has long been a very common form.

This one’s kinda personal: I was getting overwhelmed by climate news a while back, and I started looking into what can be done. For VinePair, I wrote about the drinks industry’s massive carbon footprint — and some of the solutions that are coming online.
