Honestly I’ve never been able to understand how the people who are furious about “what Disney did to Luke” don’t see that fucking off to go die in the woods somewhere is absolutely a Jedi’s destiny.

“Orange Man Bad” has always been an insufficient and facile analysis of American politics, but it is in fact true that the Orange Man is in fact very Bad.

From Times Square (V-J Day) to Dealey Plaza, delayed by about 9 months.

The difference is that that demand wouldn’t work, but this one might.

Everyone saying “but it’s one debate! Obama had a bad debate too!” are kind of missing the point that (a) it’s *not* just one debate, Biden’s clearly been on the decline for months, and (b) this debate is early enough that a switch is plausible in a way that it wasn’t in 2012.

The natural test for this would just be to let her fend off any challengers at the convention. If she can’t do that with the advantage of being the sitting VP, she doesn’t have the confidence of the party and has got no business being the nominee. (I think she’s clearly up to that challenge.)

Benjamin Franklin supposedly had some ideas about what happens in a republic when you can’t hold the leader accountable but they violate the TOS.

125 days is much longer than (for example) the entire UK election. 125 days being “too short” a time is an absurd idea in most countries.

It is surely the position of for example the NYT editorial board that both candidates should drop out. But saying Trump should drop out is (a) *pure* fantasyland, even more of a long shot than Biden dropping out, and (b) would only dilute the case for replacing Biden.

Speaking for myself, in 2020 I thought he had clearly lost a step since even 2016, but was still perfectly capable of being president. Now he just seems clearly unfit. It’s not so much that he’s not capable of serving out his current term, but where he’ll be in 2027.

It’s not that it was one debate, it’s that lots of us had decided to wait for the debate to see if what was apparently happening to him for months now was true.

It’s been my theory all along that this debate was arranged by elements in Biden’s campaign who expected him to eat shit like this so they could convince him to drop out before the convention.

I guess the generous reading of this opinion is that Kavanaugh et al. think that reaction is absurd, so laws that create it are also absurd.

Yeah I meant that the majority seemed concerned that if this is criminalized then so would going out to a celebration dinner or something, but that scenario itself is already just generally considered obviously unethical by everyone.

Kavanaugh et al., seem to think it’s just basic politeness. Now I can’t help but picture him like “why don’t I ever get one of them edible arrangibles from the United States Solicitor General”?

Like the exact “gratuity” situation is well known to businesses who do public/private work, and it’s just universally considered to be—at best—clearly unethical.

I was radicalized into this belief when the sun was allowed to rise on 1/7/2021 without at least a serious attempt to immediately impeach and remove the president having been made. I knew they were useless but I didn’t know they were “he tried to have us killed but oh well” useless.

That conversation Anakin has with Padme about how everyone should just “decide what to do and then do it” and if they don’t agree, a strong leader should *make* them agree is the smartest thing Lucas ever wrote, and I’m not sure he or anyone involved ever understood that.

At the time I do think it was defensible to decide, look we’ve got the guy contained, he’ll be gone in 2 weeks, let’s not provoke any further escalation. *I* would’ve prioritized impeachment and removal over even completing the election certification, but I don’t think Pelosi was crazy.

On the other hand, J6 itself would absolutely have been considered treason by the founding generation—the President allowed (or worse, caused) a militia to assemble in his name and to march against the Congress with violent intent. That is surely “levying war against the United States”.

What the Presidency is and how the office is filled is so profoundly different from what’s described in the bare text of the Constitution or the Federalist papers that “what the founders would think/say/do” is even more totally irrelevant than usual in that context.

I think the founders would have expected the Electoral College to take the situation into consideration during their “deliberations” and thus prevent whatever scoundrel is behind the scheme from becoming President. Those guys would be more likely to consider stealing a House seat “treason”.
