Had a fun time exploring Daufuskie Island after the show today- Saw a massive alligator! You can only see the top of it in the picture, but this thing was 9-10 feet long!

Yeah I guess I’ve been out of the game for a little as far as these events go. I think the last one I really enjoyed was Final Crisis, but that was basically all Morrison (with a couple tie-ins). Waid is so just versed in the history of both lines; I thought he’d find some newer angles to explore.

I never read an issue until a couple years ago, then found one in a dollar bin and fell in love with how wild it was. I think I have the whole run now, but evidently there was another story or two (and maybe an unreleased one) released under another title. Comics!

Catching up on last week’s books- This is my favorite issue of The Boy Wonder yet. Loved the Tim & Damian interactions and Juni Ba draws an awesomely repulsive Penguin. Excited for the finale!

Such a great Bronze Age horror story from Haney & Aparo- This 1973 Brave and the Bold featuring Batman and Etrigan the Demon teaming up (for the first time!) to stop a demon terrorizing the Gotham Docks feels like a Lucio Fulci flick! So much fun.

It’s not quite stream-of-consciousness, but utilizes symbols & free association in a way that illustrates the ideas on the page without needing to explain them. A thorough exploration of the collective unconsciousness in ways that we almost seem programmed not to think about. Beautiful.

The way the imagery and text travel back and highlight core, pre-social (or pre-societal) landmarks in our early lives really changed the way I look at everything from education to careers & relationships. Probably Moore’s most personal story and I think one of his best.

Alan Moore, Eddie Campbell, & Michael Evans’ The Birth Caul is still one of my most affecting reads. It’s harsh in its honesty, but so revealing in its call to reconcile our relationship with language and earliest experiences. "How did we come to be these wraiths in treadmill corridors?”

Two really interesting Alter Ego articles about the Rutland Halloween parade, organizer/writer Tom Fagan, and how this real event inspired seven Marvel/DC stories from 1970-'73 (stories featuring cameos from creators like Roy Thomas, Len Wein, Steve Englehart, and heroes from competing comic lines).

A real breath of fresh air for me-
Filled with ideas without relying on exposition or spending too much time on backstory, brilliant art & character design, memorable dialogue, and a fresh storytelling approach that eschews tropes of the medium.
Really all I could ask for in a comic.

There’s still a lot of comics this year, but as of now Rare Flavours by @therightram.bsky.social, Felipe Andrade, ANDWORLD Design, & @boom-studios.com is my favorite comic of 2024.

So many interviews I’ve done leave out the one quote I’m proud of and just include the background info I tell them in the first five minutes. 🙃

"Watcher of the Skies” by Genesis maybe? Or "From the Beginning,” "Tarkus” & "Lucky Man” by ELP Or some 70’s Yes tracks off of Fragile (Roundabout, Heart of the Sunrise) Similar feels. I love KC! Great soundscapes!

BOTD: prolific comic writer and artist John Byrne- My sister-in-law recently gave me this Scholastic Batman book to read with my daughter. I was blown away when I opened it up and saw Byrne did all of the illustrations! Some really cool art in this book 📖

The worst thing about watching Acolyte for me is that I decided to start Andor after watching the fourth episode of Acolyte (late to the game I know) and Andor has absolutely ruined it! 😂 The cinematography, dialogue, score, performances, style, quality, etc…is just on a whole different level.

There’s so many great gags with those two. I can’t remember the specifics, but I remember a last page joke in one of the Knightfall Scarface stories that had me laughing out loud.

Just one of those great visual comic ideas that fits so well in the Batman universe. I like the character best when there’s no backstory or explaining involved. He’s just a puppet crime boss. Perfection.

Scarface is maybe my favorite Batman villain- So absurd yet always played so straight. The character was originally going to appear in Judge Dredd, but Grant & Wagner decided to use him on Batman when they took over Detective. Excited to find the three issue "The Return of Scarface” arc this week-

I know this clip has been shared far and wide, but I will never get over how amazing this Alan Moore, Art Spiegelman, and Dan Clowes Simpsons gag is. "Oh really, so you liked that I made your favorite superhero a heroin addicted jazz critic who's not radioactive?” It’s just perfect 🏆🏆🏆

I think a lot of Morrison’s stuff is so oriented to the medium that’d it’d be odd for me to see stuff like Flex Mentallo or The Filth adapted to film.

Revisited Marvels by @kurtbusiek.bsky.social, Alex Ross, and Richard Starkings
Such a great snapshot of what makes the Marvel universe so damn cool.
And I love how it explores the permeable, parallel effects of setting these fictional stories in real locations.
