I suspect that "The DC Vault" would involve direct connection to stories from back in the day, like this one.

It usually was. I don't know why it wasn't here -- it could be that the original art was temporarily lost in the mail, so Palmer light boxed it from a Xerox. The fact that the lettering is pasted up suggests there was some deadline urgency of some sort.

Also: I expect scans of uninked pencils are hard to come by, but something like that would be an excellent project for Scott Dunbier. Not an artist-specific collection, but maybe a volume of Silver Age pencils, another of Bronze Age pencils, like that.

Sad to hear of the passing of Michael Zulli. An amazing artist and graphic storyteller.

And Colan, too. And he was good over 50s/early 60s Kirby, but not so great over mid-late 60s Kirby. Not bad, but not as effective.

One person I'd definitely have liked to see take a lighter touch with these pages is the scripter. Or two people, I guess, since both Gary Friedrich and Larry Lieber are credited with dialogue.

Yeah, but he didn't have a light touch either. He was Tanghalling it up good, which is what he was hired to do.

Probably the easiest place to see examples of that is HOW TO DRAW COMICS THE MARVEL WAY, which has a bunch of Buscema pencil art (albeit not always unobscured, if I remember correctly), including pages from this CAPTAIN BRITAIN run. I think he used them because it's what he was drawing at the time.

George Klein, too. I own one Buscema/Klein page and it’s a beauty.

I kinda think with Giordano, he’s imposing a style on it as much as Palmer is; it’s just a more conventional style. Looks great, though, because a Giordano finish is a sweet-looking thing.

Dan Adkins was an amazing inker for Buscema. Palmer’s terrific too, but if you want that lighter touch, it’s out there. Not as much once JB shifted over the breakdowns, but, well, there’s a reason for that.

and even if someone thinks "well I don't like/look at porn so why should it be a priority for me?" it's important to remember that when christofascists say "porn" they also mean age-appropriate comprehensive sex education, media with queer/trans people in it, and picture books about gay penguins.

The thing about the GOP plan to do mass deportations of “illegal immigrants” is that this country has done it twice before and both time we deported American citizens of latin descent because that’s the entire point.

I honestly wouldn’t want to live in a community of self-selected fans of my favorite Disney thing, and I don’t even know what that is. The Adventurers’ Club? Especially if they self-selected to the tune of over $5 million. That’s some serious devotion. But I do take your point, yes.

Donald Duck comics are great. But I don't want to live in a self-selected community of corporate consumers. You can swap out Donald for Mickey, Tron or the Country Bears, if you like.

On the other hand, this Disney email asking wouldn't I love to live at Walt Disney World gets a harsh fuck-no from me. Ann might like it -- if it wasn't in Florida -- but I don't want to live in no company towns. Particularly towns full of Donald Duck fans.

For once, Amazon sent a "Here are Kindle deals you might like" ad that actually pushed authors I like -- Terry Pratchett, Laura Lippman, Alexander Key (!) and Steven Rowley. Unlikely to be buying any, because libraries. But at least it let me know Rowley had a book out last year I was unaware of.

Yeah. I expect they were thinking "illustrative, textured finish," but it's not at all responsive to what Colan drew, it's just hey, Chan textures all over it. They might also have been thinking, "We need someone to start on this Right Now," of course.

Seriously. Janson and Leialoha can do it too, but I know they didn't ink any early TOMB. It was, like, Colletta and Abel and Chan, guys like that.

If it's a bimonthly book you can have two lunar cycles per issue! I like that corner of the Marvel Universe. It'd be fun to take all the second- and third-tier horror/mystic characters and do a series in that shared context.

Yeah. If I remember correctly, early on the book looked great but the writing kept shifting around, and by the time it got steady writing it didn’t look so good. But there’s some overlap in there that’s very nice.

He’s what they called “wicked good.” And on top of that his Eisnerian influences were on pretty strong display then, too.
