Yeah, and tbf there are people who start getting the patreon money in and they focus on that instead of actually producing a thing.

That's a lot of my concern. I don't care about being part of a social community of backers. I care about getting to enjoy the work. (I sometimes do join their Discords for announcements but that's it.) Maybe after I'm out of estate hell I'll feel like being grand patron of the gaming arts. Maybe.
