when I was seven, they put radium up my nose to clear out tissue that was making me deaf. Little painless wires up the nose and a tootsiepop as a reward. 82 now, can still hear. It was SOP in 1948.

Radiation therapy is still a thing, for cancer and a few other conditions. Sometimes they use a source and a catheter as you describe.
